Beyond Solar: Navigating Heating and Cooling

How Do Mini-Splits Work?

Before installing a new appliance into your home, it’s important to understand exactly how it works. 

Mini-splits consist of both an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (air handler). These units work together to cycle air between condensers and air handlers to heat or cool a room.

Your condenser  — or condensers, depending on the quantity of air handlers your building requires — will live outside your home. Based on your home’s current structural layout, you will have the option for the condenser to be placed on a flat, concrete pad, mounted to sturdy exterior building brackets, or installed on flat roof surfaces. On the flip side, air handlers are typically wall-mounted or run through ceiling vents, with one set up in each room that you would like to heat or cool.

Whereas central air systems heat and cool the entire home  — including unoccupied rooms — at once, each air handler can operate separately from the others. Additionally, they have the functionality to be programmed to heat and cool on timed increments, improving energy and cost efficiency. 

Who Are Mini-Splits For?
